Performer Invitation to participate in the 5/16/09 Young Tradition Showcase:

The Saturday showcase ‘contest’ at Waterfront Park in Burlington has been the primary focus of the annual Young Tradition event in past years, and remains a major component of the Young Tradition Weekend in an expanded format (full schedule on the web site). The program for the contest starts in the mid/late morning on 5/16/09 and finishes by 3pm, and runs simultaneously with Kids Day at Waterfront Park.  It is designed so that young singers, players and dancers in single, duo or groups formats can perform 2 or 3 numbers each, usually no more than about 10 minutes.

The audience selects their favorites by filling out a form and handing it in before the end of the afternoon.  Prizes include showcase performances at a variety of concerts, festivals, coffeehouses and tours, cash (1st, 2nd and 3rd place), recording studio time, contribution to a CD project, and more to be announced.  There are no judges for the contest and all styles and genres that fit under the ‘folk and traditional’ umbrella are welcome.  There is time for about 20 ‘acts’ and we strive to make sure that what is presented at the contest is either directly related or inspired by what is generally considered folk and traditional music or dance…..  chances are if you think it fits, it probably does!

Prospective performers who have not participated in the past are asked to submit an audio and/or video sample (please include electronic contact information for replies).  Samples will be returned if self-addressed, postage-paid packaging is included with the application.  Samples will be reviewed and contacted by Julia Wayne and Mark Sustic.  Samples should be e-mailed to mrksustc@together.net or mailed to: Young Tradition Weekend, PO Box 163, Fairfax, VT 05454.  We will strive for balance in the genres presented, the instruments used, and the traditions presented, etc. (e.g. we try to not have just fiddlers, just dancers, just singers, etc.).

BHW Celebrates New Site Launch: Jan. 31 @ Lyndon State College!

Posted by Big Heavy Jim at 8:16 am | Filed under: Upcoming Events, Live Reviews & Show Photos |

Big Heavy World and Lyndon State College are teaming up to celebrate the new BHW web site on January 31, tearing up the LSC campus with some of Vermont’s highest octane independent rock bands.

Lyndon State College, located in Lyndonville, VT (map), has a new music industry major and high energy for supporting local music - look for a lot of live music action in the Northeast Kingdom because of them in 2009, starting with this lineup:

HUSBANDS AKA
http://www.myspace.com/husbandsmusic
“Husbands AKA combines elements of Jamaican ska and Reggae with American hardcore and punk rock. The band is characterized by walking basslines, scratch-like tempos, keyboard rhythms on the offbeat, hard work, good clean fun, and inebriated joy.”

IN MEMORY OF PLUTO
http://www.myspace.com/inmemoryofplutorock
“In the summer of 2006, the International Astronomical Union unceremoniously stripped Pluto of its planetary status, demoting it to the sniggle-inducing subcategory of “dwarf planet.” Those were dark days in the Milky Way, indeed. Roughly one year later, a quintet of presumably disillusioned ladds came together to honor the passing of one of our solar system’s greats the only way they knew how: with hard rockin’. So it was that In Memory of Pluto was born.” - Dan Bolles, Seven Days Newspaper

MANEUVERS
http://www.myspace.com/maneuversband
“Maneuvers are an outfit from Burlington, who are doing exciting things with fast, electric rock music. The band has a promising sound which seems to be pointed towards finding some new territory beyond the conventions that often stifle groups working with the energetic, loud and heavy tunes. With only three members, Maneuvers produce a healthy amount of noise. The steady, melodic bass and throaty vocals work along with intricate guitar riffs and rhythms parts to create a dynamic, powerful live performance.”

VITALS
http://www.myspace.com/vitalsmusic
“When four individuals gather to compose music in the library of an old farm house, a haughty milieu is conjured. A delicate chandelier hanging in the center of the room illuminates each hunched-over figure while their shadows crawl upon the collection of hard-bound literary works. However, the setting, much like the music created, is not as myopic as it appears. Outside of these walls is the Halcyon Horse Farm, which stands defiant to the popular trend of a sprawling city. This detachment from the urban lifestyle gives a sense of balance; the ruggedness of nature and the tenderness of culture. Approaching composition with a heuristic method allows the members to constantly fine-tune each work until a general consensus is reached.  Even at that point of satisfaction, nothing is set in stone and frequently pieces are revisited and updated with unique articulations.

Our Last Night

Our Last Night

OUR LAST NIGHT - http://www.myspace.com/ourlastnight
Inspired by hardcore and metal, Our Last Night delivers an onslaught of taut thrashing riffs and intense hardcore breakdowns that meld perfectly with lush melodic landscapes and soaring, irresistibly catchy choruses. Sharp technical precision meets raw inspiration on songs like the addictive “Escape” which is currently streaming here

Our Last Night, which consists of Trevor Wentworth (growls), Matt Wentworth (guitar, melodic vocals), Alex “Woody” Woodrow (bass), Colin Perry (guitar) and Tim Molloy (drums), was formed in 2004 by childhood friends who were fed up with merely jamming and playing cover songs. With only a few live performances under their belt, Our Last Night entered the studio shortly afterward to record their first EP, ‘We’ve Been Holding Back’. Vigorous live performances helped the band earn respect and fans throughout the New England area and by 2005 they entered the studio to record their next EP, ‘Building Cities From Scratch’. In the summer of 2007, after being impressed by their self-made demos, owner and president of Epitaph Records, Brett Gurewitz, came calling and invited the band to join the label.

“From the very first note of the demo I was blown away by the sophistication of their writing and the technical playing which belies their young age,” said Gurewitz. “Add to that the control and range of Matt’s stellar singing voice and I was sold.”

FOREVER THEY SAID - http://www.myspace.com/forevertheysaid
Burlington VT’s premier metal/hardcore outfit. They represent the upcoming youth of the local scene with amazing breakdowns coupled with intense vocals and sing-a-long’s with actual singing. Featuring former members of FALL OF THE MACHINES and BLACK NIGHT VENGEANCE this band is a local powerhouse.

YOUNG DENVER - http://www.myspace.com/youngdenver
Young Denver, formed in May of 2008, consists of present and former members of WRECK, MANEUVERS, and BROKEN WHITE RECORD. Coming from different musical backgrounds, a quick spark of chemistry was formed in Young Denver from their start. Being comparable to Saves the Day and New Found Glory this is a rival line up and performance for them to be a part of.

Johnny Booth

Johnny Booth

JOHNNY BOOTH - http://www.myspace.com/johnnyboothmusic
Oneonta/Long Island, NY based Johnny Booth absolutely slay audiences with their mix of metal and jazz hardcore, this will be one of many shows as they have decided that their home base is more welcoming here in Burlington, VT than in their home town of Long Island, NY. Future split coming out with Burlington’s ghosting (http://www.myspace.com/ghostinghc) as well as a full nine day tour around the Northeast.
